He's not let this Sarah Salvatore thing go and this week he enlisted poor Matt to find out just how nice she is. Step forward Enzo, who is always a delight to watch. With Kai now crippled by some of Luke's humanity, it feels like we need a new villain on the scene. But with an understanding between them - it's all in the eyes - they held off, as Stefan is Too Nice to take advantage. The giggles quickly turned to tears but Stefan was there for her, and there was a fantastic moment when it looked like they might kiss. But the best moment came as Caroline dug up the teddy bear - only for it to fall apart in her hands. The relationship between the duo has been charming for ages now but it was particularly wonderful here, as Stefan doggedly stayed with Caroline while lifting the mood by pointing out how ridiculous she was being (and even knocking her to the ground in an affectionate moment). Basically, it's no surprise that she heads into the woods to dig up Ms Cuddles, who ended up buried after a childhood row with Bonnie, because it's the only thing she can control.Īnd it's no surprise that Stefan is there with her for it all. Her mania is dialled up a notch her coping mechanisms are utterly believable. I'm so in love with the way the show has dealt with Caroline these last few weeks, because it's so wonderfully in character - all of it. Also because it allows her to smooch the face off him.Įlsewhere, it's hard for Caroline to move on when she's slap bang in the middle of everything - namely, her best friend being stuck in purgatory and her mum dying of cancer. It's actually a pretty interesting thought - would she be with Damon if she was still human? - but ultimately she recognises that she is a vampire and should own that, feelings for Damon and all. And Elena herself decides to let go of the past, after Kai tactlessly points out that she's only with Damon because she's a vampire. Once Jeremy knows that Bonnie's alright, Elena convinces him to smooth out his trashed art school application and get on with his life (which he agrees to largely because he'd seen Bonnie's planned suicide video, in which she urged him to enjoy his life). We can't imagine Liv's going to take too well to that news.īut she might have to move on, like many of the characters this episode. So once he knew she was okay, he vowed never to see her again. Naturally, Liv's attempted rampage didn't go without its consequences - for one thing, it made it harder for Jeremy to get through to Bonnie in 1994, but for another, for some reason Tyler wasn't too happy that Liv had sent him to sleep and completely ignored his loving words of wisdom. Sure, his frustrated head-slapping was reminiscent of that classic scene in The O.C. Having had no qualms about doing Very Bad Things in the past - even to his own flesh and blood - it was entertaining to see him towering over Liv as she urged him to murder her, utterly unable to do so. That it was Kai made it even more entertaining. It led to one of the best fight scenes that we've seen on the show for a while, not just because it was pleasingly blood-drenched, but because it's rare that we see someone questioning their decision to murder right slap bang in the moment. Of course, Liv wasn't having any of that and decided to get vengeance on Kai - not knowing that the merge had infused him with weird feelings of empathy and less psychopathy than he's generally used to, and that he was trying to help Elena, Damon, Jeremy et al get Bonnie back from his spiritual prison. It was hard not to feel your heartstrings being sharply tugged when she spoke about how she has never been apart from Luke before: "I don't know how to do this," she gasped, her eyes wide as Tyler tried to be there for her. Penelope Mitchell has been a welcome, charismatic presence as Liv, but we saw a new side to her this week in her grief over Luke. Lots of that was down to Kat Graham, who absolutely nailed Bonnie's despair laughing at herself, bitterly throwing her calendar into the fire while wishing herself happy birthday, and of course the emotional speech she records on a camcorder just as she waits for her garage to fill with carbon monoxide, bemoaning her loneliness and only deciding to save herself when she realises her Grams told her to stay strong.īut she wasn't the only one knocking it out of the park this week. But it also had some really wonderful scenes, too. This episode had its cheesy moments - the light flooding the garage when Bonnie decides not to kill herself after all Damon and Elena's sexy cupcakes the unusually over-the-top music. Of course, it took us a long while to get there - and what a journey it was.
