So these are the tools that I’ve looked at in more detail: Tool/Area There were a lot of products out there, aimed at small scale content producers, who you could pay a fee to, to convert pre-existing publications like magazines or brochures, into interactive online content There were some tools, including some freely available ones, that looked on the surface to have soem great capabilities but would have been ore suitable for someone from a web development background ![]() There were some tools that were recommended to me by other people that just didn’t have ther capability to add any media T here isn’t a massive budget for this project and so there were some tools that were looking for a big bundle of money for strictly one license, for one user, on one PC that could be discounted before I even looked at what they provided Generally this was for one of four reasons: In fact it soon became obvious that actually, there really wasn’t that much choice out there, for what our requirements were. Starting the search, it seemed that there were a plethora of tools out there and a lot of time could be (and was) spent investigating them and eventually rejecting a lot of them. Comparing authoring toolsīefore being able to produce any eBooks I’ve been comparing tools available to produce them. A student does not use a resource in isolation but along side lecture notes, print books, websites, and easy navigation is needed for a resource to be well used. However, the main negative, was the difficulty in navigating between resources. The main positive point that students took away was the ability to study any time, any place. Whilst these projects were based around finding a platform for eBooks rather than creating new ones, there are still lessons for this project. The University of Notre Dame have looked at the use accessing course reading for a Project Management module. One of the lecturers, Phil Wood, has used iBooks Author to package learning materials together. The University of Leicester has uploaded course readings to iPads for students on distance learning courses. There are a few institutions that have taken a look at the use of e readers in general for accessing eBooks. If you want to read more about this project try reading the paper Building Mobile Learning Capacity in Higher Education: E-books and iPads® or take a look at Professor Hulmes’ publication list for more papers on the wider project. Having seen their final presentation it is encouraging to see that other people have had to face issues such asĬan you get an iPad wet? Will students refer to resources outside of a classroom setting? And what do you do when you have no wi-if? This area is particularly relevant as fieldwork is one of the areas I’ll be creating eBooks for. Organically this led to two lecturers, Clive Sexton and Rob Parsons, producing an eBook for use in fieldwork. In their work tutors were given iPads, with the theory that they needed to engage with technology if they were going to encourage students to do so. Martin Smith and Agnes Kukulska-Hulme have written a chapter in the freely downloadable book e-books and e-readers in e-learning that I would highly recommend reading (and probably the other chapters too but I’ve not made my way through it all yet). This was part of a larger project on mobile learning. ![]() The Open University have just completed a project looking at the use of eBooks with mobile devices. ![]() In shocking news: we’re not the only people to be interested in the use of eBooks by students.
